Reinvesting Money Already Spent

The Op-Ed chart on War spending presented by the NYTimes is brilliant, but a bit misleading. Yes, it is true, the money could have been also invested in numerous domestic programs, and the money still should be invested there. But the truth is, as the recent low-intensity conflict in Israel has shown, that a static defense is unable to block modern terrorist warfare.
The war for Iraq has significantly changed the strategic situation in the Middle East, and, while it might not be a cakewalk, it certainly has set the ball rolling. Without a dictator, the Iraqi people are moving towards creating an idea of what a proud Arab democracy may look like, and the creation of this idea will have more value than any public diplomacy America can propogate.
